The Legacy of a Single Grain of Rice

📖 Chapter One: The Legacy of a Single Grain of Rice

I was born in a small rural village in Alor Setar, Kedah. For generations, my family ran a rice mill business.

The rice mill was not only our livelihood — it was also our home.

From a young age, I woke up every day to the fragrance of rice and the roar of machinery. Growing up in that environment, I witnessed my grandfather’s and father’s dedication, passion, and deep commitment to the family business.

However, life is always full of challenges.

After my grandfather passed away due to diabetes, my father took over the rice mill and worked hard to grow the family business step by step.

Unfortunately, the good times did not last.

On the very day my SPM results were released, our rice mill had to close down due to changes in the market and increasing business difficulties.

At that time, our entire family had no choice but to leave our familiar hometown and move to Kuala Lumpur to start all over again.

I also gave up the opportunity to attend university and stayed by my father’s side as he tried to build a new business.

My father ventured into several different industries. However, due to a lack of experience, he faced repeated setbacks and eventually exhausted all of his savings.

Under tremendous pressure, my father and mother decided to return to our hometown, while I stayed behind in Kuala Lumpur and began making my own way.

Over the next five years, I worked while studying part-time and eventually completed my studies in Music Recording Engineering.

After that, I naturally found my way into a behind-the-scenes music-related role at an international television news station.

Whenever I returned to my hometown, my family and I would almost instinctively take a detour along the road leading back to our old home, just to visit the place where the rice mill once stood.

Although the mill had already been demolished and the land cleared, I would always remember its busiest days — the scenes of my father and uncles working tirelessly are still vivid in my mind.

Every time I stood on that empty piece of land, I would remember the lonely expression on my father’s face when he said goodbye to me and returned to our hometown years ago.

An indescribable sense of loss would come over me.

It was at that moment that I quietly made a promise to myself:

I would continue my family’s connection with rice and carry forward the dream that had been left unfinished.

📖 Chapter Two: The Beginning of a Loaf of Bread

A few years later, I started a family of my own, and we welcomed our child into our lives.

Little did I know that this child would lead me down a completely unexpected path.

When my child was three years old, he was diagnosed with a gluten allergy. At the time, he was also experiencing some developmental delays and challenges with emotional regulation.

At first, I did not take my wife’s concerns seriously.

It was only when the doctor’s diagnosis placed the reality directly in front of me that I truly understood:

He would need to follow a gluten-free diet for the long term.

A gluten-free diet excludes grains containing gluten, such as wheat, barley, and rye.

When I truly began implementing a gluten-free diet, I discovered that suitable gluten-free products were almost impossible to find in the local market.

Even getting a loaf of gluten-free bread required considerable time and money because it had to be purchased from overseas.

That was when I made up my mind:

I wanted to make gluten-free bread for my child with my own hands.

But the reality was far from easy.

❌ Ingredients were difficult to find:
Many ingredients used in overseas recipes were simply unavailable in the local market.

❌ Texture was a challenge:
Bread made from white rice tended to dry out and become hard, and my child quickly lost interest in eating it.

❌ There was nowhere to learn:
At that time, there were no gluten-free baking courses locally where I could acquire the necessary skills.

All I could do was rely on scattered recipes I found online.

I experimented, learned through trial and error, and repeatedly faced failure.

My lack of baking skills, limited ingredients, and the frustration that came with every failed attempt brought me close to giving up many times.

But whenever I saw the hope in my child’s eyes, I told myself:

I cannot give up.

From being a complete beginner in baking to finally producing my first soft loaf of gluten-free bread after countless failures, I went through a journey filled with challenges, persistence, and determination.

It was precisely those years of perseverance and practice that transformed me from a baking beginner into the gluten-free baking instructor I am today.

📖 Chapter Three: The Dream Journey of Rice and Bread

Throughout this journey, I gradually discovered that:

✅ Rice is not only a staple food for Asians — it also has tremendous potential in baking.

✅ In-house freshly milled rice flour helps preserve more of the rice’s original nutrients and reduces nutrient loss during processing.

✅ A gluten-free diet is not only relevant to children with special dietary needs, but may also be meaningful to modern consumers who are looking for different dietary options, including those concerned about blood sugar management or seeking healthier eating approaches.

From the closure of my father’s rice mill to my child’s journey with a gluten-free diet, these two stories may seem completely unrelated.

Yet both are closely connected by a single grain of rice.

Rice is not only part of my family’s legacy.

It has also become the bridge through which I help my child and pursue a dream of healthier living.

📖 Chapter Four: Where the Dream Begins

And so, Goglufree 谷留香 was born.
